Last night, the Borough Council opened the door to an even brighter future for Jessup. By a majority vote of 4 to 3, the Council adopted a fix for Jessup’s zoning ordinance that complies with the law and, most important, protects the well-being of the entire community. This vote allows the Lackawanna Energy Center development process to move ahead in the ideal location, on the far side of the Casey Highway and further from homes and businesses.
It is an essential step forward for the Lackawanna Energy Center, and a big opportunity for Jessup. Over its 40-year life, this facility will generate more than $50 million in new revenue for the Valley View School district, Jessup Borough, and local first responders. With it will come more than 600 good-paying jobs during the 2+ years of construction, and 30 family sustaining jobs once the facility is operational. And, by helping Pennsylvania transition away from coal, it will reduce regional air pollution.
To get here, hundreds of individuals signed petitions, showed up at hearings, and made their voices heard in support of clean energy and family-sustaining jobs. Thanks to your hard work and tireless advocacy, Jessup’s future looks even brighter.
This process isn’t over though. In the coming weeks, keep an eye out for information here regarding the next phase of the Borough permitting process.
