Wednesday night, the Borough Council demonstrated real leadership. With a six-to-one majority vote they affirmed what we have long argued – Jessup’s zoning ordinance illegally excludes development that would otherwise be allowed. This vote removes an obstacle to development of the Lackawanna Energy Center at the ideal location and paves the way for a cleaner environment and a more prosperous Jessup.
Hats off to the Jessup Borough Council for their well-reasoned decision as well as their thorough and transparent examination of this issue. To all the citizens from Jessup and throughout the Lackawanna River valley who have written letters, attended hearings, signed petitions, and voiced their support for this project – THANK YOU. Wednesday night, the Council heard you loud and clear. And they agreed!
However, as VP Dan Ewan said “This is the first step in a number of steps in the whole process…” So what are the next steps?
Next week, on Wednesday, September 2nd, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will hold a hearing at Valley View High School on the project’s air permit. DEP regulators have reviewed the project and declared that it will meet all emissions standards, which are designed to protect our health and environment. This hearing lets us show DEP that we support their decision and this project. Mark your calendar!
In the next two weeks, the Borough Council will act to fix the exclusionary ordinance. Invenergy has presented the Council with a number of possible fixes. They will weigh the options and identify a solution that is best for Jessup. Invenergy remains fully committed to being a community partner and collaborating with the Council through this process.
Throughout this process, the Borough Council will be listening to the community. That’s why your continued support is so important. To keep this project on track, we need you to keep writing letters, attending hearings, signing petitions, and voicing your support. Last night was a great example of what Jessup can do when we come together. Let’s keep that momentum going!
